  • What are the requirements to be a volunteer?
    All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age (in high school) or older. They also need to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19, including 1 booster vaccine. All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a minimum of 2 personal/professional references. All volunteers 18 years old and older will be required to complete a background check.
  • What is the time commitment for volunteering?
    For most positions, we ask for a weekly 4-hour shift commitment, and that our volunteers complete a minimum of 100 hours of service. This amounts to about 6 months of commitment to volunteering.
  • What is the process to become a volunteer?
    All applicants must complete a volunteer service application for review. Once your application is accepted, you will be sent a checklist of orientation paperwork to complete and be invited for a volunteer interview.
  • Are interviews required to volunteer?
    Volunteers will come to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for an in-person interview. We think it is important to meet face to face to make sure that the volunteer position is a right fit. Your interview also allows you the time to ask questions and ensure that this is the role you are excited about. We conduct interviews at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital on a scheduled basis as well.
  • Am I able to choose where I will volunteer?
    We always try to provide volunteers with the experience they want. However, volunteer opportunities are based on the needs of the hospital.
  • Can I shadow a Doctor or Physician?
    Shadowing is not under the scope of volunteering.
  • Can I get a letter of recommendation?
    We are happy to write a recommendation letter for any who has completed 100 volunteer service hours.
  • Can Cottage Health Employees volunteer as well?
    Cottage Health employees can volunteer in a service area that is not under the same department umbrella that they work in.
